Flying Fox
‘Let the fox fly, Clothing without boundaries’
Sophisticated & beautifully made in Aotearoa.
Using a mix of natural fibres & recycled elements Flying Fox designs contemporary clothing that tells a unique story. Designer Sandra Tupu draws inspiration from her own and other cultures, and from nature.
Tupu is interested in the spaces, shapes & forms clothing can create surrounding the body just as much as upon the body.
Flying Fox focuses on creating high quality, small artisanal collections, timeless custom pieces in a sustainable way for both individuals and the performing arts community.
Tupu offers an alteration service to the local community – as she is equally passionate about extending the lifespan of clothing and finding ways to reduce waste & upcycle. Striving to tread more lightly upon our earth.
Sustainability
Tupu is currently exploring ways for Flying Fox to create less waste through innovative low waste pattern making, capsule ranges with small runs, making to order, reusing some upcycled materials, eco-printing, supporting local producers/suppliers.
Tupu is a member of Mindful Fashion and is very passionate about sustainable values as an organisation helping to unite our industry, promote sustainability along with a goal of bringing back our making into Aotearoa and is currently on the board. As a part-time Lecturer at AUT Tupu is also helping students to align their values and practices with sustainability in mind.
Design well sustainably & responsibly, buy less, wear more!
Diversity
Flying Fox is proud to produce gender fluid clothes. Comfort is a big focus and their style highlights this and is obtained by using innovative drape and pattern making often starting from a key ‘shape’ discovered whilst researching a range. Personal fit can be achieved through a custom measure and adjustments and most garments can fit a wide range of sizes. Flying Fox will show their new range ‘Harper’ on Male & Female models of a diverse cultural mix to illustrate these values.
